e-Passport Interoperability Testing

Functionality Testing

The tests detailed below can be performed on PICCs in inlays and PICCs in MRTDs.

Purpose Tests
Physical & Electromagnetic Environmental Tests
Checks the PICC is not adversely affected when subjected to external electromagnetic fields.
Coil Dimension Check, Static Electricity Test, X-Ray Test, UV Test, Hmax Test
Analogue RF Tests
Checks that the analogue RF circuitry in the PICC will be able to detect and interact correctly with RF fields generated by the analogue circuitry of compliant PCDs.
Load Modulation test, Operating Field Strength, Communication Stability Test - Type A, Communication Stability Test - Type B, Resonance Frequency Test.
Digital RF Framing Tests
Checks that the PICC will be able to detect and interact correctly with RF fields generated by the circuitry of compliant PCDs in order to enable the exchange of information at the bit, byte and frame level.
Startup Time Frame Delay, Time Start-Of-Frame- & End-Of-Frame-Timing, Extra Guard Time (EGT), Timing before PICC SOF (TR0 & TR1)
Digital RF Activation Tests
Checks that the PICC will be able to detect and interact correctly with frames generated by compliant PCDs in order to enable the PCD to select and establish communications with that PICC.
Handling of Type A anticollision, State Transitions, Handling of RATS, Handling of PPS, Polling, PICC Reception, State Transitions, Handling of Type B Anti-collision, Handling of ATTRIB
Digital RF ISO14443-4 Protocol Tests
Checks that the PICC will be able to establish and maintain an error-free and timely conversation with a compliant PCD.
Exchange of I-blocks, Chaining of I-blocks, DESELECT, Request for Waiting Time Extension
ICAO Application Command Tests
Checks that the PICC will be able to correctly handle the commands which provide the functionality of the ICAO Application, and that it correctly rejects all other (invalid) commands.
SELECT APPLICATION, SELECT FILE, READ BINARY, READ BINARY (Odd INS), GET CHALLENGE, EXTERNAL AUTHENTICATE, INTERNAL AUTHENTICATE, Secure Messaging transaction using BAC and Active Authentication, Invalid Commands
ICAO Application Data Tests
Checks that the PICC will be able to correctly handle the commands which provide the functionality of the ICAO Application, and that it correctly rejects all other (invalid) commands.
EFCOM Tests, EFSOD Test, DG1 Test, DG2 Test, DG15 Test

With the exception of the first two groups of tests, Physical & Electromagnetic Environmental Tests and Analogue RF Tests we would not expect the results to differ between PICCs and MRTDs. We recommend testing PICCs to give early assurance of compliance.
